Alzheimer's Awareness Month
Celebrating Alzheimer's Awareness Month at Cardinal Place
January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Canada, a time to shine a light on the realities of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
At Cardinal Place, we’re proud to provide compassionate care and support to our Members (Members = Residents) and their families through our dedicated, secured 24/7 Memory Care Floor.
This month, we want to highlight the importance of awareness, understanding, and specialized care for those living with cognitive decline.
Understanding Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, affecting over 600,000 Canadians. It impacts memory, reasoning, and daily functioning, making everyday activities increasingly challenging. While there is currently no cure, early diagnosis and specialized care can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals and their loved ones.
Our Memory Care Floor: A Place to Thrive
At Cardinal Place, our Memory Care Floor is designed with the unique needs of individuals living with cognitive decline in mind. Here are some of the key features that set us apart:
- Specialized Environment: Our floor is equipped with dementia-friendly designs, including clear signage, secure spaces, and individualize "favourite colour" doors to reduce confusion and anxiety.
- Person-Centred Care: Every member is treated as an individual, with care plans tailored to their personal history, preferences, and needs. Our trained staff build meaningful connections with members, fostering trust and comfort.
- Engaging Activities: From art therapy, music sessions, garden walks (weather permitting) to our daily activities are designed to stimulate cognitive function, promote socialization, and bring joy to our members.
- Family Involvement: It takes a team. We believe in partnering with families to provide holistic care. Regular family events, support groups, and educational resources ensure loved ones feel informed and supported.
- Secure: Beside the best fire safety systems and solid-triple-glaze windows, Cardinal Place has also installed secure keypads for all floor exits and entrances.
Raising Awareness: How You Can Help
Alzheimer's Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about dementia. Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Learn the Signs: Early detection can make a significant difference. Familiarize yourself with the early signs of Alzheimer's, such as memory loss, difficulty completing familiar tasks, and changes in mood or behaviour.
- Support Caregivers: Caregivers often face significant emotional and physical challenges. A kind word, a listening ear, or even volunteering your time can make a big impact.
- Donate or Fundraise: Organizations like the Alzheimer Society of Windsor Essex provide invaluable resources and support. Consider making a donation or organizing a fundraiser to contribute to their mission right here in our local community.
