Memory Care

You need a team. To care for someone with cognitive decline or to cope with your own decline is a challenge, to say the least. It can be exhausting, heartbreaking, and very scary.

One thing is certain, you can't do it alone.

Cardinal Place Memory Care Retirement Home has a caring, trained, certified team to care with and for you.

What is the Memory Care Floor?

The Memory Care Floor is on the second floor of Cardinal Place. If offers 22 suites specially designed for seniors with cognitive disabilities.

It is staffed 24/7 by caring, trained and certified professional carers for dementia. Plus, the Personal Support Workers on this floor have the other caring professionals throughout Cardinal Place backing them up and supporting our Members.

What services are included?

Members on the Memory Care Floor enjoy all the usual services included at Cardinal Place: medicine distribution, cleaning, laundry, meals, phone, WIFI, and so much more. For a full list of all services included with all our suites, see Smart Independent Living.

Specific to our Secure Memory Care Floor is attention, activities and security.

Attention: our staff to Member ratio is higher than long-term care facilities, is 24/7, and specifically trained in dementia care.
Activities: optional activities are encouraged but never forced. Boredom and stress are to be avoided in good dementia care. Morning, afternoon and evening activities include brain-gym based games, crafts, supervised walks in our generous garden spaces, and meals together.
Security: unfortunately, severe cognitive decline can include "wandering". Typically, the person is thinking of something urgently needing their attention in another place. Besides an attentive and engaged staff, Cardinal Place has installed triple glaze, solid windows (in-room heater/AC units provide fresh air) and key pad locks at all exits and entrances of our second floor. Furthermore, all the public spaces have recorded video cameras to help us see if someone is in need or is not in a safe place for their needs and capacities.

What is the cost of Memory Care?

The cost of Memory Care is $1200 extra per month on top of our regular room rate. This is equivalent to our Cardinal Care Level 2 Package.

What if needs change?

Cardinal Place has a solid reputation for putting our Members' needs first. If more care or supervision is necessary for a Member's well-being, we will engage that care then speak to the person's family or Power of Attorney about added costs. Conversely, if a Member's needs become reduced, we will reduce the care and costs. In other words, we simply change to a different Cardinal Care Level to suit the member's needs.

Hallway Lighting

Did you know that shadows can be confusing and alarming for a person with advancing cognitive decline? Cardinal Place brightened and upgraded our secure Memory Care Floor hallway with a smooth, consistent LED lighting. We also placed several items of interest to help engage people needing dementia care.

Memory Care secure floor

It is an uncomfortable subject, yet some individuals who need Memory Care also need a Secure Floor. By camouflaging the exit doors a little bit, exit seeking is less on the person's mind.

All fire exits and the elevator on and off of Cardinal Place's secure Memory Care Floor are opened by a key pad code. They are also released in a fire alarm emergency.

Moreover, 24/7 trained, professional staff help seniors needing Memory Care engaged and active throughout the day.

This helps reduce boredom, loneliness, and stress, all aggravating factors in cognitive decline.

Memory Care beyond our Secure Floor

At Cardinal Place, Memory Care is not limited to our secure Memory Care Floor. When the elevator door opens, each floor features unique flooring, decor and colours. This eases one's recognition of one's home floor. Less stress means less decline. Little details make a big difference.

Bedroom Colours

What is beyond a door can be a challenge to remember for someone with cognitive decline. Different colours are easier to distinguish and remember.

That is why each door inside each Memory Care Floor bedroom has a distinct, different, pleasant colour. One for the hallway, one for the closet, one for the bathroom.

Less stress means more peace.

Memory Care Hallway Doors

Welcome to Cardinal Place's version of St. John's Newfoundland's famous "Jelly Bean Row"!

Cardinal Place Memory Care features unique door colours along the hallway. When a person needing dementia care moves in, we ask them what their favourite colour is. The door to their bedroom from the hallway and from their bathroom are both painted that colour. Soon, they easily know their bedroom is through their favourite coloured door.

It's the details that matter when creating a safe, welcoming, stress-free place to live.
